Legislation: The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust was established by Executive Order of the Governor in 1986. Bill HB1664 established a permanent commission to “survey, design, encourage, and promote implementation of Holocaust education and awareness programs in Georgia,” and to be “responsible for organizing and promoting the memorialization of the Holocaust on a regular basis throughout the state.”

ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Georgia Performance Standards for Social Studies (2007):

Grade 5
Standard SS5H6: The student will explain the reasons for America’s involvement in World War II.
b. Describe major events in the war in both Europe and the Pacific; include Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day, VE and VJ Days, and the Holocaust.

Grade 6
Standard SS6H5: The student will describe major developments in Europe during the 20th century.
c. Describe World War II; include the ideas of Nazism and Facism, the Allied and Axis powers, the Holocaust, D-Day, Stalingrad, and the roles of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Churchill, Roosevelt, and Truman.

Grade 7
Standard SS7H6: The student will describe major developments in the Middle East during the 20th century.
a. Explain the historical reasons for the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948; include anti-Semitism in Europe, Zionism, and the Holocaust.

Grade 8
Standard SS8H9: The student will describe the impact of World War II on Georgia’s development economically, socially, and politically.
c. Explain the impact of the Holocaust on Georgians.

Grades 9-12
Standard SSWH18: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the global political, economic, and social impact of World War II.
b. Identify Nazi ideology, policies, and consequences that led to the Holocaust.

These standards are mandatory in Georgia.
