Title: Establishment of the Alabama Holocaust Commission

Legislation:
On June 1, 1999 the Alabama State Legislature passed an act, HB140, to establish the Alabama Holocaust Commission. The Commission will “provide assistance to the public and private schools, colleges, and universities with respect to implementation of Holocaust education and awareness programs.” The act also authorizes the commission to create a nonprofit corporation for revenue raising purposes.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS
Alabama Course of Study: Social Studies (2004):
Grade 9, “World History: 1500 to the Present” requires students to:
14. Describe causes and consequences of World War II. Examples: causes: unanswered aggression, Axis goal of world conquest; consequences: changes in political boundaries; allied goals; lasting issues such as the Holocaust, Atomic Age, and Nuremberg Trials
Objective 9.14.4: Describe the impact of the Holocaust on the populations of Europe.
Grade 11, “United States History: 1877 to Present” requires students to:
7. Explain the entry by the United States into World War II and major military campaigns in the European and Pacific Theaters.
Objective 11.7.4: Describe the reaction of the United States to the Holocaust.
Additional content to be taught:
Explaining events and consequences of war crimes committed during World War II, including the Holocaust, the Bataan Death March, and the Nuremberg Trials.
These standards are mandatory in Alabama.
